Running Toward Success: Akron Marathon

The annual Akron Marathon Race Series showcases our city to runners from across northern Ohio and around the world.

In 2016, Akron Children’s Hospital became the title beneficiary of the Akron Marathon. The “Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series” marked the beginning of a 5-year partnership between our hospital and the Akron Marathon Charitable Corp. And the results were rewarding.

The race series included the National Interstate 8k and 1-Mile Run on June 25, the Goodyear Half Marathon & 10k on August 13, and the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay on September 24. The event raised a total of $425,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital.

“We were honored to have the support of the marathon and the Akron community as we stepped into our new role in this signature community event,” said Bill Considine, president and CEO of Akron Children’s. “Also, our real-life patient heroes featured throughout the marathon served not only as inspiration for our runners, but for our staff as well. We couldn’t have been prouder.”

When Barbara Ford of Gibsonia, PA, got hurt and had to walk the last few miles of the half marathon at the First Energy Akron Marathon, 15-year-old James Wilson, an Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series Hero Patient, left his post at the hero zone in front of the hospital to join her for the last 1.7 miles of her race. James is being treated at the hospital for Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. #ewingssarcoma #akronchildrens #ACHero #runakron #akronmarathon
